The University of Iowa

The Learning Spaces Technology [LST] group provides consulting, design, installation, training, management and support for 300+ technology-equipped University Classrooms [UCRs] across campus and classrooms assigned to departments.

Classroom Updates

Beginning Fall semester of 2020, all UCRs will have webcams and microphones for use with UICapture software for lecture capture and podcasting, and Zoom software for synchronous classroom delivery:
•  Camera - Huddly Go, USB HD web conferencing camera with wide-angle lens on flexible arm mount, or wall-mounted PTZ webcam
•  Microphone - MXL AC-404 USB Conferencing boundary mic, or wireless microphone

Beginning Fall semester of 2021, all UCRs will have Solstice Pods for in-classroom wireless content sharing, and Zoom-compatible document cameras:
•  Wireless Presentation Device - Mersive Solstice Pod with unlimited connections
•  Document Camera - WolfVision vSolutions Cam document camera [or original document camera]

Getting Started with ABW 116 University Classroom Technology

 

Using Room Mode

This learning space is equipped with Room Modes unique to this learning space and controlled via Extron digital touchscreen A/V Control Panel Interface. The three unique Room Modes available in this learning space are: SINGLE, DUAL, and DUAL ADVANCED.

  • SINGLE MODE
    • this mode provides normal Dual Monitor-Single Screen Media Lectern functionality with abilities to independently select and display various sources/inputs on one centered screen
  • DUAL MODE
    • this mode provides normal Dual Monitor-Dual Screen Media Lectern functionality with abilities to independently select and display various sources/inputs on each left & right screen
  • DUAL MODE ADVANCED
    • this mode provides DUAL MODE functionality plus an advanced capability to independently select and display various sources/inputs to a supplemental Confidence Monitor [your second PC monitor]
  • ROOM RESET
    • this mode provides a reset to SINGLE MODE and normal Dual Monitor-Single Screen Media Lectern function

Note: Room Modes can be changed amid session by pressing the ROOM MODE RESET button on the A/V Control Panel Interface

Using A/V Control Panel

This learning space is equipped with an Extron digital touchscreen A/V Control Panel Interface.

  1. To start A/V system, choose a mode by touching the lectern's Control Panel Interface screen and remember to shutdown system [press SHUT DOWN button] when finished

If you encounter an unresponsive A/V Control Panel Interface:

  • check VIDEO MUTE button[s] are not selected on A/V Control Panel Interface
  • attempt to shutdown and restart A/V Control Panel Interface
  • contact ITS Help Desk if A/V system remains unresponsive

Using Dual Monitor-Single Screen Projector

This learning space is equipped with dual lectern computer monitors and single projector/screen in SINGLE MODE.

  1. When pressing the touch-screen A/V Control Panel Interface, the A/V system will by default use PC [the lectern computer's primary monitor] as its source/input
  2. To view or project room computer's secondary monitor, select PC EXTEND 
  3. To view or project an alternate source, such as PC, DOC CAM, BLU-RAY, or SOLSTICE, select accordingly on A/V Control Panel Interface

If you encounter an unresponsive projector:

  • check VIDEO MUTE button[s] are not selected on A/V Control Panel Interface
  • see Digital Imaging Projector documentation for additional information, and/or contact ITS Help Desk

Using Dual Monitors-Dual Screen Projectors

This learning space is equipped with dual lectern computer monitors and dual projectors/screens in DUAL MODE.

  1. When pressing the touch-screen A/V Control Panel Interface, the A/V system will by default use PC [the lectern computer's primary monitor] as its source/input
  2. To view or project room computer's secondary monitor, select PC EXTEND 
  3. To view or project an alternate source, such as PC, DOC CAM, BLU-RAY or SOLSTICE, select Display Input Selection accordingly on A/V Control Panel Interface

If you encounter an unresponsive projector:

  • check VIDEO MUTE button[s] are not selected on A/V Control Panel Interface
  • see Digital Imaging Projector documentation for additional information, and/or contact ITS Help Desk

Using Lectern Computer

This learning space is equipped with a Windows Desktop Workstation Computer.

  1. A/V system will by default use PC [lectern computer's primary monitor] as its source/input
  2. Press Space Bar on computer keyboard to wake main computer display
  3. Log on with HawkID & password, and remember to log off when finished

If you cannot access computer’s login menu:

  • check VIDEO MUTE button[s] are not selected on A/V Control Panel Interface
  • check computer monitor is powered ON
  • make certain HDMI/Display Port cable is connected on back of monitor
  • restart computer by pressing down Power Button on computer until it powers down, then press again to restart
  • contact ITS HelpDesk if issue persists

Using Wireless Microphones

This learning space is equipped with Wireless Microphones, both lavaliere and handheld microphone.

If you encounter non-working wireless microphone:

    • check microphone info display for power and/or muting
    • check microphone display info for potential battery replacement; rechargeable batteries are typically located on battery charger, alkaline batteries are typically located within microphone drawer
      • if using rechargeable battery supplies, remember to replace depleted batteries on charger
      • if nearing end of battery supplies, contact ITS Help Desk for resupply
    • select ATR2USB as audio input/source device in lectern computer's Zoom, Panopto, or Skype for Business apps
    • if correct audio input device is not available for lectern computer's apps, contact ITS Help Desk

Using Computer/Web-conferencing USB Camera

This learning space is equipped with a Huddly Go webcam.

  • Huddly Go webcam on flexible mount may be manually re-positioned as needed

If you encounter non-working Computer/Web-conferencing USB Camera:

    • select Huddly Go as camera input/source in lectern computer's  Zoom, Panopto, or Skype for Business apps
    • unplug/re-plug USB cable on back of Huddly Go camera
    • if correct camera input device is not available for lectern computer's apps, contact ITS Help Desk

Room Audio

This learning space is equipped with in-room audio output from lectern computer through ceiling-mounted speakers and controlled via A/V Control Panel Interface.

  • A/V Control Panel Interface contains touchscreen Volume Slider; drag Volume Slider up to increase volume, drag Volume Slider down to decrease volume
  • Press Audio MUTE button on A/V Control Panel Interface to control audio muting

If you cannot produce in-room audio from lectern computer with the A/V system on and un-muted:

    • ensure computer/device, app, or website audio is not muted
    • increase computer/device, app, or website audio level, or increase A/V Control Panel Interface audio level
    • select Intel(R) Display Audio HDMI as speaker or audio playback source in lectern computer's Zoom, Panopto, or Skype for Business apps
    • check computer/device audio Settings: select Intel(R) Display Audio HDMI as lectern computer's audio output device or playback source

Using Blu-Ray Media Player

This learning space is equipped with a Blu-Ray Media Player.

  1. Select BLU-RAY as display input/source on A/V Control Panel Interface
  2. Press Eject button on Blu-Ray Media Player disc tray [typically mounted in A/V rack] or A/V Control Panel Interface to load BD or DVD media
  3. Blu-Ray Media Player may be controlled with A/V Control Panel Interface, or by remote control typically available near Blu-Ray Media Player or in A/V rack drawer

If you cannot produce in-room video and/or audio from Blu-Ray Media Player with the A/V system on and un-muted, and BLU-RAY selected:

    • increase A/V Control Panel Interface audio level
    • toggle VIDEO MUTE button[s] on A/V Control Panel Interface [found under TOOLS menu], or toggle MUTE button on Blu-Ray remote control [if available]
    • restart A/V system by pressing control panel SHUT DOWN button, wait a minute, then touch A/V screen to STARTUP again
    • contact ITS Help Desk if issue persists
    • if using DVD media, you may alternatively attempt to play it through lectern computer's DVD player

Using Document Camera

This learning space is equipped with a WolfVision document camera.

  1. Select DOC CAM as display input/source on A/V Control Panel Interface
  2. Document camera should auto power on; if unresponsive, check document camera has power cable connected and press power button ON [the DOC CAM should be found in a side drawer of the desk]

If document camera cannot be projected with A/V system on and un-muted, and DOC CAM selected on A/V Control Panel Interface:

    • press power button on document camera; if unresponsive, check document camera has power cable connected
    • check HDMI cable to document camera is securely connected [for use with Zoom, or UICapture/Panopto, document camera must also have a USB cable connection]
    • toggle VIDEO MUTE button on A/V Control Panel Interface
    • restart A/V system by pressing control panel SHUT DOWN button, wait a minute, then touch A/V screen to STARTUP again
    • contact ITS Help Desk, if document camera remains unresponsive

Connecting Laptops/Tablets via HDMI

This learning space is equipped with an HDMI cable to display/project HDMI-capable devices.

  1. HDMI-capable devices connect provided HDMI-cable on media lectern to personal device's HDMI-port [laptops/tablets or HDMI-adapters are provided by user or department]
  2. Select HDMI button as display input/source on A/V Control Panel Interface

If you cannot produce in-room video and/or audio through HDMI with the A/V system on and un-muted, and HDMI selected as input/source on A/V Control Panel Interface:

    • increase A/V Control Panel Interface audio level
    • toggle VIDEO MUTE button[s] and/or Audio MUTE button on A/V Control Panel Interface [found under TOOLS menu]
    • restart A/V system by pressing control panel SHUT DOWN button, wait a minute, then touch A/V screen to STARTUP again
    • contact ITS Help Desk, if issue persists

Note: not all HDMI-adapters may work well with every device and Extron A/V system; testing HDMI Personal Device Connection prior to intended use is highly recommended

Using Solstice

This learning space is equipped with Solstice wireless collaboration and content sharing platform.

  1. Select SOLSTICE as source on A/V Control Panel Interface

If Solstice cannot be projected with the A/V system on and un-muted, and SOLSTICE selected on A/V Control Panel Interface:

    • Solstice may require a power-cycling; report to ITS Help Desk
