The University of Iowa

The Learning Spaces Technology [LST] group provides consulting, design, installation, training, management and support for 300+ technology-equipped University Classrooms [UCRs] across campus and classrooms assigned to departments.

Classroom Updates

Beginning Fall semester of 2020, all UCRs will have webcams and microphones for use with UICapture software for lecture capture and podcasting, and Zoom software for synchronous classroom delivery:
•  Camera - Huddly Go, USB HD web conferencing camera with wide-angle lens on flexible arm mount, or wall-mounted PTZ webcam
•  Microphone - MXL AC-404 USB Conferencing boundary mic, or wireless microphone

Beginning Fall semester of 2021, all UCRs will have Solstice Pods for in-classroom wireless content sharing, and Zoom-compatible document cameras:
•  Wireless Presentation Device - Mersive Solstice Pod with unlimited connections
•  Document Camera - WolfVision vSolutions Cam document camera [or original document camera]

Getting Started with CNB 40 University Classroom Technology

 

Using A/V Control Panel

This learning space is equipped with an Extron digital touchscreen A/V Control Panel Interface.

  1. To start A/V system, touch lectern's Control Panel Interface screen and remember to shutdown system [press POWER OFF SYSTEM button] when finished

If you encounter an unresponsive A/V Control Panel Interface:

  • check BLANK DISPLAY button is not selected on A/V Control Panel Interface
  • attempt to shutdown and restart A/V Control Panel Interface
  • contact ITS Help Desk if A/V system remains unresponsive

Using Room Modes

This learning space is equipped with Room Modes unique to this learning space and controlled via Extron digital touchscreen A/V Control Panel Interface. The three unique Room Modes available in this learning space are: BASIC MODE, MIRROR PROJECTORS MODE and BROADCAST MODE.

  • BASIC MODE
    • this default mode, available from the main menu of the Control Panel Interface, provides Single Monitor-Dual Screen Media Lectern functionality with the capability to independently display a unique source/input on Left Projector and Right Projector
  • MIRROR PROJECTORS MODE
    • this mode provides Single Monitor-Multiple Screen Media Lectern functionality with abilities to independently select and display a single source/input for both screens
    • BROADCAST MODE
      • this mode, accessible from within the Broadcast menu of the Control Panel Interface, provides BASIC MODE or MIRROR PROJECTORS MODE functionality plus an advanced capability to Broadcast various sources/inputs to remote learning spaces [within select CNB room locations]; available in both BASIC MODE and MIRROR PROJECTORS MODE
        • Toggle Broadcast button ON, then select Source to Broadcast [NONE SELECTED, is default setting]
        • Toggle Broadcast button OFF to reset A/V system to BASIC MODE

    Using Single Monitor-Multiple Screen Projector

    This learning space is equipped with a single lectern computer monitor and multiple projectors/screens [two screens] in BASIC MODE [projectors not mirrored] to help facilitate duplication of content display in large learning spaces.

    1. Select PROJECTORS Input Selection on A/V Control Panel Interface [by default, A/V system will use COMPUTER, the lectern computer's monitor for All Displays]
    2. To view or project an alternate source, such as WIRELESS, LAPTOP, or DOC CAM, select Display Input Selection accordingly on A/V Control Panel Interface

    If you encounter an unresponsive projector:

    • check BLANK DISPLAY button is not selected on A/V Control Panel Interface
    • see Digital Imaging Projector documentation for additional information, and/or contact ITS Help Desk

    Using Single Monitor-Dual Screens

    This learning space is equipped with a single lectern computer monitor and dual projectors/screens in MIRROR PROJECTORS MODE to help facilitate multiple sources of content display.

    1. Select PROJECTORS Input Selection on A/V Control Panel Interface [by default, A/V system will use COMPUTER, the lectern computer's monitor, for Left Projector and Right Projector]
    2. To view or project an alternate source, such as WIRELESS, LAPTOP, or DOC CAM, select accordingly on A/V Control Panel Interface

    If you encounter an unresponsive projector:

    • check BLANK DISPLAY buttons are not selected on A/V Control Panel Interface
    • see Digital Imaging Projector documentation for additional information, and/or contact ITS Help Desk

    Using Lectern Computer

    This learning space is equipped with a Windows Desktop Workstation Computer.

    1. Press Space Bar on computer keyboard to wake main computer display
    2. Log on with HawkID & password, and remember to log off when finished

    If you cannot access computer’s login menu:

    • check computer monitor is powered ON
    • make certain HDMI/Display Port cable is connected on back of monitor
    • restart computer by pressing down Power Button on computer until it powers down, then press again to restart
    • contact ITS Help Desk, if issue persists

    Using Wireless Microphones

    This learning space is equipped with a Wireless Microphone [two lavalieres and a handheld].

    • Wireless microphones provide audio input for both room's speakers, as well as lectern computer and its Zoom, UICapture/Panopto, and Skype for Business apps
    • Switch/power wireless microphone ON
    • Microphone levels and muting may also be controlled on the AUDIO menu of the Control Panel Interface
    • Remember to return wireless microphone to recharging base for next user when finished

    If you encounter non-working wireless microphone:

      • check microphone info display for power or muting
      • check microphone display info for potential recharging on microphone base typically located on/near lectern surface
      • select Speakerphone (Extron MediaPort200 Speakerphone) as audio input/source device in lectern computer's Zoom, Panopto, or Skype for Business apps
      • wireless microphone may require re-pairing with microphone base
      • if correct audio input device is not available for lectern computer's apps, contact ITS Help Desk

    Using Computer/Web-conferencing USB Camera

    This learning space is equipped with a wall-mounted PTZ camera.

    • PTZ cameras may be re-positioned with Control Panel Interface as needed [press CAMERA source button on A/V Control Panel Interface to access options]

    If you encounter non-working Computer/Web-conferencing USB Camera:

      • select Extron MediaPort200 as camera input/source in lectern computer's Zoom, Panopto, or Skype for Business apps
      • if correct camera input device is not available for lectern computer's apps, contact ITS Help Desk

    Room Audio

    This learning space is equipped with in-room audio output from lectern computer through ceiling-mounted speakers and controlled via A/V Control Panel Interface.

    • A/V Control Panel Interface contains touchscreen volume buttons; press volume up to increase volume, press volume down to decrease volume
    • Press Audio MUTE ALL button on A/V Control Panel Interface to control audio muting
    • Program levels and muting may also be controlled on the AUDIO menu of the Control Panel Interface

    If you cannot produce in-room audio from lectern computer with the A/V system on and un-muted:

      • ensure computer/device, app, or website audio is not muted
      • increase computer/device, app, or website audio level, or increase A/V Control Panel Interface audio level
      • select SVSi NSeries (Intel(R) Display Audio) as speaker or audio playback source in lectern computer's Zoom, Panopto, or Skype for Business apps
      • check computer/device audio Settings: select SVSi NSeries (Intel(R) Display Audio) as lectern computer's audio output device or playback source

    Using Document Camera

    This learning space is equipped with a WolfVision Visualizer document camera.

    1. Select DOC CAM as display input/source on A/V Control Panel Interface
    2. Document camera should auto power on; if unresponsive, check document camera has power cable connected and press power button ON

    If document camera cannot be projected with A/V system on and un-muted, and DOC CAM selected on A/V Control Panel Interface:

      • press power button on document camera [typically, doc cam's power button light should turn green when powered on]; if unresponsive, check document camera has power cable connected
      • check document camera has HDMI cable connected to OUTPUT [for use with Zoom, or UICapture/Panopto, document camera must also have a USB cable connection]
      • toggle BLANK DISPLAY button on A/V Control Panel Interface
      • restart A/V system by pressing control panel POWER OFF SYSTEM button, wait a minute, then press STARTUP again
      • contact ITS Help Desk, if document camera remains unresponsive

    Connecting Laptops/Tablets via HDMI

    This learning space is equipped with an HDMI-cable to display/project an HDMI-capable personal device.

    1. To display/project HDMI-capable personal device, connect provided HDMI-cable on media lectern to personal device's HDMI-port [laptops/tablets or HDMI-adapters are provided by user or department]
    2. Select LAPTOP as display inputs/sources accordingly on A/V Control Panel Interface

    If you cannot produce in-room video and/or audio through HDMI with the A/V system on and un-muted, and LAPTOP selected as input/source on A/V Control Panel Interface:

      • increase A/V Control Panel Interface audio level
      • toggle BLANK PROJECTOR and/or MUTE ALL button on A/V Control Panel Interface
      • restart A/V system by pressing control panel POWER OFF SYSTEM button, wait a minute, then press STARTUP again
      • contact ITS Help Desk, if issue persists

    Note: not all HDMI-adapters may work well with every device and Extron A/V system; testing HDMI Personal Device Connection prior to intended use is highly recommended

    Using Solstice

    This learning space is equipped with Solstice wireless collaboration and content sharing platform.

    1. Select SOLSTICE as source on A/V Control Panel Interface

    If Solstice cannot be projected with the A/V system on and un-muted, and SOLSTICE selected on A/V Control Panel Interface:

      • Solstice may require a power-cycling; report to ITS Help Desk

    Using Accessible Media Lectern

    This learning space is equipped with an Accessible Media Lectern with adjustable height capability.

    1. Press lectern's height-adjusting buttons [typically located on right side and just under lectern's surface] to raise/lower lectern
