What is Kaltura?

Kaltura, a new online multimedia platform that stores, publishes, and streams media, will be available to University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students after April 8th, 2019.

With Kaltura, users can upload media—including audio files, videos, and images—and assign specific permissions to media, sharing items publicly or privately. No special software is needed to view media uploaded to the platform.  Kaltura’s features also make it easier to capture, edit, and caption videos.

Kaltura will replace the ShareStream service, which will be retired in June 2019.

We would like to thank the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, TIPPIE College of Business, Distance and Online Education, and University Libraries for partnering with Information Technology Services (ITS) and the Office of Teaching, Learning & Technology to make this possible.

Kaltura / ICON integration
ICON / Kaltura Integration (KAF)

Instructors and Students can use the Kaltura integration in ICON to upload, convert, record, comment on, and share videos directly from within their ICON course.

Students can upload videos to share with the rest of the class, and instructors can approve the release of those videos to the class.

Instructors can organize media into playlists, create video quizzes, and view analytics about how their students are engaging with videos in the course.

Kaltura MediaSpace (available later this spring)

Kaltura MediaSpace is the website and user interface that allows users to upload, convert, manage, and distribute video and audio content on the web. Users can upload media content to Kaltura MediaSpace, at which point it is automatically converted and optimized for distribution on the web. Media links and embed code are provided as well as users having the ability to add metadata, set permissions, add captions, and do simple edits.
