University Classroom Technology Guide

VGA Laptop Connection

VGA Connection

A VGA Laptop Connection is available in select UCRs across campus as a legacy technology and is most commonly used to connect a laptop to the learning space's A/V system.

  • VGA typically passes video content through the cable only, so a separate audio cable connection to the room A/V system is required [3.5mm audio cable is typically supplied with VGA-cable on lectern]
  • Use of a direct VGA connection [over use of an VGA device adapter] is advised whenever possible
  • Not all laptops may have an VGA-port, allowing adapters to provide the ability for devices with various display port types to be adapted to VGA; therefore, it is advised to verify the type of adapter required by a specific laptop*

* Please note, individuals or departments typically supply laptops and device adapters

Connecting Laptop via VGA

Testing VGA connection prior to intended use is highly recommended.

  1. To use VGA Laptop Connection, connect provided VGA-cable on lectern to laptop VGA-port [laptops or VGA adapters are not typically provided]
  2. Select VGA [or VGA (Laptop)] as display source/input on A/V control panel

If you cannot produce in-room video and/or audio through VGA with the A/V system on and un-muted, and VGA selected, then:

    • increase A/V control panel audio level
    • toggle PICTURE MUTE [PIC MUTE, or MUTE] and/or AUDIO MUTE button on A/V control panel
    • restart A/V system by pressing control panel SYSTEM SHUTDOWN [or OFF] button, wait a few minutes, then press STARTUP again, or contact ITS Help Desk
