Who is eligible to use Zoom?

All faculty, staff, and students are able to use Zoom as their web conferencing solution. Use of the system is reserved for educational, research or institutional purposes. University of Iowa individuals with a HawkID and password are able to create meetings, but anyone can join a Zoom session.

How much do Iowa's Zoom services cost?

The Zoom web conferencing service is offered through ITS and is of no cost to faculty, staff, or students. However, there may be circumstances when a college may choose to purchase special licensing.

Is Zoom available in my ICON course?

Yes, a Zoom meeting can be added as an external tool to any existing module in your course.

What is a Meeting ID?

Meeting ID is the meeting number associated with an instant or scheduled meeting. The Meeting ID can be a 9 or 10 digit number. The 9 digit number is used for instant, scheduled or recurring meeting. The 10 digit number is used for Personal Meeting IDs.

How long does it take before a Meeting ID expires?

A non-recurring meeting ID will expire 30 days after the meeting is scheduled. A recurring meeting ID will expire 365 days after the meeting is started on the last occurrence. You can re-use the meeting ID for future occurrences. You can restart the same meeting ID as many times as you would like within these time constraints.

What is the difference between the Zoom Meetings Application and the Zoom Web Portal (

The options you enable on the meeting settings page in the Zoom web portal determines what tools are available to you in all your meetings and webinars. Be sure to review and enable the tools you may want to use, such as alternative hosts, co-hosts, polls, nonverbal feedback icons, etc. before you start your session. Any tools or features that are disabled on this page will not be available to you in any of your meetings or webinars.

How is the Zoom Meetings Application software updated?

Zoom does not push automatic updates. For mandatory updates, a prompt will appear within the client as "A new version is available! Update". Additionally, you may choose to check for optional updates within settings menu of your client.

How do the Zoom features behave during a meeting if users have mismatched versions of the software?

Users with outdated versions of the Zoom application software will still be able to join a Zoom meeting, but they may not have all the newest features available to them.

What are Breakout Room sessions?

Breakout rooms are sessions that are split off from the main Zoom meeting. They allow the participants to meet in smaller groups. Breakout rooms can be used for collaboration and discussion of the meeting.

As the meeting host, how can I give an individual elevated privileges in my Zoom Breakout Room sessions while maintaining hosting privileges?

Unfortunately, there can only be one meeting host within a breakout rooms session. Besides the host, all other individuals within the breakout rooms will be made participants.
