I want to use for my class. Can I use this instead of the ICON integration?

We recommend using the Turnitin integration from within ICON (Canvas). If you still wish to use the Turnitin web interface, please send an email to the ITS Help Desk at Please be aware of your college's and department's plagiarism policies. Please refer to the Instructor Guide for more information.

I am getting a "date_post - post date myst be after start date" error when I create an assignment. What do I do?

  1. Create the assignment (name and instructions only).
  2. Enable Turnitin using External Tool. Do NOT enter any dates or other information.
  3. Save.
  4. Go back in, enter the dates and other information, for example, assigning to students, etc.
  5. Save and publish.

I'm getting an "oauth" error. What do I do?

  1. Please make sure you are following the steps described here to create a Turnitin assignment on pages 3-7 of the Turnitin Feedback Studio Guide.
  2. Make sure the assignment is NOT set to open in a new tab.
  3. Log out of ICON.
  4. Clear out browser cache and cookies. Or, try a different browser.
  5. Log in.
  6. Turnitin should work now.

Can I copy a Turnitin assignment from one course to another?

Yes, you can. You will need to click on the newly-created Turnitin assignment once before the students can access it. If you do not, they get an error message.

How do I use a Canvas rubric with a Turnitin assignment?

  1. Create an assignment without enabling Turnitin. You can create as it as an online assignment with file upload.
  2. Save the assignment.
  3. Attach the rubric you want to use.
  4. Enable Turnitin using the External Tool feature.
  5. Publish.
  6. The rubric will no longer be visible from the assignments page. However, it will still be accessible in Speed Grader from the assignments page.

My students are unable to submit their assignment as the Continue/Upload button is missing from the Turnitin assignment page. How can I help them?

This usually happens if you have a lot of text on the assignment page, and the assignment is linked in modules (has "Previous" and "Next" buttons at the bottom of the Turnitin assignment page), which cuts off part of the Turnitin submission window for students.

This is what it should look like:

The workaround is to reduce the amount of text on that page, or create a file with that text and link it on the assignments page, or set the assignment to open in a new tab. Please be aware that setting it to open in a new window can sometimes cause issues with some students not being able to upload.

I forgot to enable Turnitin for an assignment and the students have already submitted their work. Can I enable Turnitin now?

In Canvas, Turnitin cannot be enabled for an assignment after students have submitted to it. If you do, it will wipe out all student submissions. There are 2 workarounds for this:

  1. The first workaround is more straightforward. Simply create another assignment with Turnitin enabled and have students resubmit.
  2. The second workaround requires more work:
  • Download all the student submission from Canvas.
  • Go to
  • Create a class.
  • Create an assignment.
  • Upload each student submission to it.

For instructions on this step, please refer to Instructor Turnitin Website Guide.

Can Turnitin catch AI written assignments?

With the rise of text generative artificial intelligence (AI), Turnitin has created some helpful resources on their AI Landing Page that share information about how faculty and staff can navigate this new technology. Turnitin has also shared a sneak peek of Turnitin's AI writing and ChatGTP detection capability. This capability will be reviewed and it will not be activated without providing additional details and support documentation to the user community.

For further information, the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology has created a resource about artificial intelligence tools.
