The University of Iowa

There are two ways to set-up a Turnitin Assignment in ICON. The first method is to use the Turnitin Plagriarism Framework in ICON, which allows students to submit their work directly to ICON and similarity reports are available in Speegrader. The second method is to set-up an Assignment with Turnitin/Feedback Studio selected as an External Tool. This option requires students to submit their work directly in Turnitin and similarity reports are available through Turnitin, not ICON. Steps to set-up both of these assignments are followed below.

Turnitin Plagiarism Framework

Using the Turnitin Plagairism Framework is a simple approach to incorporate Turnitin directly into an ICON Assignment.

  1. Start your Assignment in ICON.
    • Go to icon.uiowa.edu and find your course.
    • Click on Assignment in the navigation menu to the left.
    • In the upper right, click +Assignment to create an assignment.
    • Fill out the assignment information, including the name, a description of the assignment, and the number of points and the assignment group.
  2. Set the Submission Type
    • Under Submission Type, select Online.
      • Submission Type for Assignment in ICON
    • Under Online Entry Options, select Files Uploads and/or Text Entry.
  3. Set the Plagiarism Review,
    • Change the menu from None to Turnitin.
      • Plagiarism Review Options for an ICON Assignment
    • For any questions about Turnitin setting, visit their Help Page.
  4. Scroll down to check the Turnitin and ICON settings. Make any necessary changes.
  5. Click Save at the bottom.
  6. Now you will have an ICON assignment that runs student papers through Turnitin. Student similarity scores will appear in SpeedGrader and in the ICON Gradebook.

Turnitin External Tool Guide

Using Turnitin as an External Tool, you will have your students submitting their work through the Turnitin website, instead of ICON.

  1. Start your Assignment in ICON.
    • Go to icon.uiowa.edu and find your course.
    • Click on Assignments in the navigation menu to the left.
    • In the upper right, click on +Assignment to create an assignment.
    • Fill out the assignment information, including the name, a description of the assignment, the number of points and the assignment group.
  2. Set the Submission Type to External Tool and create a Turnitin Assignment.
    • Under Submission Type, select External Tool.
    • Under Enter of Find an External Tool URL, click Find.
      • Submission Type for External Tool in ICON
    • Scroll through the choices in Configure External Tool, and select Turnitin/Feedback Studio (NOT Turnitin Framework), then click Select.
      • Configuration of External Tool with Arrow pointed at Turnitin/Feedback Studio
    • Do not check Load this Tool in a New Tab.
  3. Set ICON Due Dates.
    • Select the date you want the assignment to be due. You can also set when it becomes available, and when students will not be able to access the assignment anymore
      • Notice, if you set an Until date, students will not be able to access reports or comments in Turnitin.
  4. Click Save or Save and Publish.
  5. Check and Update Turnitin Settings.
    • Now you can see the Turnitin Assignment Inbox. Click Settings to the right.
      • Turnitin.com assignment settings
    • The information provided in ICON will be a darker gray and not able to be edited in Turnitin. You can edit the ICON assignment to update these.
    • Click Enable PeerMark if you want to use that tool for students to peer review each other’s papers.
    • Check/Adjust Optional Settings. These settings allow you to:
      • Determine whether papers are saved in the Turnitin repository.
      • Allow late submissions
      • Make sure you are comparing against Student paper repository, Current and archived website content, and Periodicals, journals and reviews
      • Determine when papers get checked for plagiarism, how often students can resubmit and whether they can see their reports.
      • Exclude some material from being checked in Turnitin.
  6. When you are done adjusting the settings, click Submit at the bottom.
