Video Quizzing

What is a Video Quiz Platform?

UI Capture and Kaltura are two video delivery platforms used at the University of Iowa. UI Capture is a lecture capture application, and Kaltura is a video file storage platform.

Both UI Capture and Kaltura integrate with Iowa’s Learning Management System ICON and allow users to build quizzes into the videos themselves. After a video is created using UI Capture or a video is uploaded to Kaltura, quiz questions can be placed at specific time points throughout the video to assess student learning as well as recall difficult concepts.

What are the Pedagogical Benefits of In-Video Quizzes?

Student Engagement

The benefits surrounding in-video quizzing focus mainly on student engagement. The more active or interactive the student is with content, the more likely they are to retain that information. If you’re interested in keeping students engaged and raising initial performance, intersperse your questions in-video rather than at the end of your presented material.

Feedback

The timeliness of feedback is crucial to student learning and therefore waiting until the end of the presented material may not be the most effective approach. This could be especially problematic if the material introduces multiple concepts which build upon each other. The in-video quiz technique provides a mechanism for addressing the common problems with traditional lectures where there is a common issue with the lack of feedback between lecturer and student.

Which Video Quiz Platform Should I Use?

Depending upon your needs, you may choose to use either of these video delivery platforms to assess student learning. Below are a few scenarios that may clarify which platform would suit the needs of your classroom best.
